Bertelsmann, the media giant, has said it could sell up to 15 per cent of its 90 per cent stake in RTL, the European TV group, fuelling speculation that it could use the money to mount a bid for ITV.
The company also reported pre-tax profits of EUR637 million (£512 million) for the first half of 2008, up from EUR472 million for the same period last year.
