- While the film world gathered in Los Angeles for the Oscars at the weekend, further up the coast the wired world gathered for the third annual Webby Awards in San Francisco.

Hosted by the mayor of San Francisco, Willie Brown, the awards had their own glamour with judges of the 22 award categories including the likes of film director Francis Ford Coppola, X-Files star Gillion Anderson and rock star David Bowie.

The winners at the Webby Awards, which are an IDG event, included the big names, with Amazon.com taking the best commerce site award, CNN Interactive the news site award, Salon Magazine the print and zines award and Sonicnet the music site award.

Alongside the big names there were a host of other sites you may not be so familiar with. Winning in the finance section was The Motley Fool, a site that gives investor advice. Meanwhile, The Onion, a serious-looking online newspaper, was the winner in the humour category for its deadpan but ficticious stories with headlines like: "Mourners Unable To Comprehend Last 20 Minutes Of Kubrick's Life".

Gamers Central was named best games site and Intelihealth was judged to be the best health site.

BabyCenter won for the second year in a row. The advice site for parents proved the power of winning an award when business increased tenfold after last year's Webby.

A number of UK sites were shortlisted with BBC.co.uk losing out to CNN in the news section. London Fashion Week lost out to PaperMag in the Fashion category. But winning in the film section was the UK's Internet Movie Database.
