His departure follows the dismantling of the utilities giant's group marketing function and a disposal of businesses in a cost-cutting drive, which led to his role being made redundant. He had been offered a post, believed to be based overseas, but turned it down. Waugh does not have a job to go to.
Waugh, who joined Centrica from Saga Services in 1997, was appointed head of global marketing in October 2002. He was also deputy managing director of its British Gas business.
Since the group marketing function was disbanded earlier this summer, Centrica's brands have been run on an individual basis. British Gas director of marketing Nick Smith has been given additional responsibility for commercial sales.
Centrica recently sold its motoring assistance brand AA to venture capitalists CVC Capital Partners and Permira Advisers for £1.75bn. Last year it sold credit-card brand Goldfish to Lloyds TSB unit Create.
British Gas is spending more than £50m on a campaign flagging its customer service. Ads by Clemmow Hornby Inge use the strapline 'Doing the right thing' (Marketing, 2 October).
