The "Big Book Bank" promotion will launch in September. The work is part of Waterstone's activity in support of the National Year of Reading initiative.

Children will be encouraged to bring in books they have read and place them in Waterstone's-branded areas of their school library for other children to take.

Vouchers will be offered to children and parents who bring in books. Children will receive a "What to read next" leaflet with the voucher for a new book from a pre- selected list.

Parents will receive a 10-per-cent-off coupon for purchases made in Waterstone's worth over £10. The offer is limited to one per child and is being communicated to children by teachers, online and in-store. Waterstone's is planning to use six titles for the "What to read next" list. One of these is You're a Bad Man, Mr Gum by Andy Stanton.

The Big Book Bank promotion will follow on from the "What's Your Story?" microsite set up by Waterstone's to encourage budding writers. The scheme launched last month, offering people the chance to have their story published alongside one by Harry Potter creator JK Rowling.
