Watchdog questions TiVo on privacy issues

A US privacy watchdog has questioned whether personalised television service provider TiVo kept its promise to protect consumer privacy.

LONDON (Brand Republic) - A US privacy watchdog has questioned whether personalised television service provider TiVo kept its promise to protect consumer privacy.

The Denver, Colorado-based Privacy Foundation discovered that interactive television service TiVo had gathered enough data to track individual鈥檚 viewing habits, despite a pledge not to do so, after it conducted a four-month investigation. TiVo has issued a statement saying it does collect the data but keeps it separate from information identifying specific households.

TiVo told the Privacy Foundation that while it collects details on viewers it ensures that the anonymous information is not traced back to subscribers.

It says that it collects the data about what shows viewers watch for marketing purposes. Its rival Replay TV does not collect data.

TiVo also collects information about what commercials subscribers skip.
