Wary GMG ponders sales contract options

GMG Radio could be forced into finding another home for its national advertising sales efforts if Global’s proposed acquisition of GCap Media goes ahead.

GMG moved its sales contract into GCap on 19 October last year, after an acrimonious split with Global. Julian Carter, GMG Radio's group director of sales, admitted that the group is examining its options.

"All I can say is that we are considering all eventualities and have not made any conclusive decisions," he said. "We will sit and wait."

An unnamed radio executive said he thought GMG is "very nervous at the prospect of working with Global again", adding that the potential Global/GCap deal puts GMG "in an interesting position".

Should GMG pull its sales contract, with limited options, it could take sales in-house.

"GMG is keen on expanding Smooth, so it could bring sales in-house," said a source.

GMG's contract with Global was ended amid claims GMG had presented "commercially unacceptable" new terms and conditions, forcing Global to request an "orderly parting of the ways".

Others claimed that GMG played GCap and Global off against each other, which resulted in GMG demanding an increase to GMG's advertising revenues of more than 80%. It is believed the GMG sales contract would have been worth £1.5m to Global.
