War on terrorism widens as Palestinians <BR>targeted in ad campaign

LONDON - The US government is to begin a press, poster and internet advertising campaign offering rewards for information on specific Palestinians involved in the killings of Americans.

The campaign is an extension of the "Rewards for Justice" campaign launched by the US State Department. The latest campaign is looking for information leading to the capture of terrorists who have been involved in the killings of Americans in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

The campaign will come as a further blow to the embattled Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and indicates tacit growing support for the Israeli government's hardline position on dealing with Islamic terrorists operating out of the West Bank and Gaza.

Until now, the US has steered clear of targeting Palestinians specifically and has stuck closely to appeals for terrorist suspects such as Osama bin Laden. The move is likely to enrage already hostile Islamic Palestinian feelings.

The photographs and descriptions of specific Palestinians wanted for the deaths of as many as 21 Americans has been added to the campaign's dssrewards.net website. The site already carries details on the FBI's 22 "most wanted terrorists".

According to a spokesman for the campaign: "The Department of State has decided to post on the website rewards for information that leads to the arrest or conviction of individuals responsible for certain acts of terrorism against US citizens in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Any person who provides information leading to the arrest or conviction of an individual for an international terrorist act against American persons and property may be eligible for a reward."

The campaign also comes as the US seeks to widen its war against terrorists following the September 11 attacks on the US.
