Wall Street Journal Europe changes managing director

LONDON – The Wall Street Journal has appointed Jon Housman, a former McKinsey consultant, as the new managing director of its European edition, which is due to go compact next month.

Housman replaces Rien van Lent, who is leaving the Wall Street Journal to establish his own consultancy business based in Europe.

Housman was the co-founder and former CEO of New York-based Jungle Media Group, a print, web and events publisher serving MBA and law school students.

Taking responsibility for the European business's printing, circulation, advertising, marketing, finance, new business and distribution, Housman will report to Penelope Muse Abernathy, senior vice-president of international and development for The Wall Street Journal.

"Jon brings a wealth of experience in the media sector, a solid background in finance and strategy, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit," Abernathy said.

Prior to founding Jungle Media in 2000, Housman worked in Europe and the Middle East as a consultant for McKinsey, specialising in areas relating to strategy and digital technology for companies in the media and entertainment industries.

He also spent time at merchant bank Leedan Group working on corporate restructurings and mergers and acquisitions.

Van Lent was appointed managing director of the WSJ Europe in June 2001, joining from Dutch business daily Het Financieele Dagblad.
