Walkers bribe sees Lineker wed Granny Kumar in new ad

LONDON - Gary Lineker is to marry Granny Kumar from the BBC show 'The Kumars at No 42', all for the sake of a few more bags of crisps, in a lavish new TV ad for Walkers.

Another in the long-running series starring the footballer and created by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, the latest outing promotes the new range of Great British Takeaways flavours from Walkers, including chicken tikka masala and Chinese spare rib flavours.

In the ad, which breaks on Thursday, Lineker is persuaded to marry his bride by the promise of a gift of Walkers Crisps from the bride's father. He then gets a shock when his bride turns out to be Granny Kumar, played by the actress and novelist Meera Syal.

"Gary Lineker was an absolute star but I think he got the shock of his life when he first set eyes on Granny Kumar as his bride," Syal said.

The ad is one of the biggest created for Walkers, featuring an elaborate Bollywood-style wedding procession with hundreds of extras. It was written by AMV's Peter Souter, with art direction by Souter and Mike Durban, and directed by Paul Weiland through Weilands.

Other celebrities Lineker has shared the screen with during his tenure as the face of Walkers include Paul Gascoigne, Kate Winslet and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. While the advertising campaign has been hugely successful for Walkers, Lineker has been named in a poll published by the pressure group the Food Commission as the greediest star.
