Walker-i appoints first search chief

Walker-i, the digital arm of Walker Media, has appointed Tharien Pieterse from South African online marketing firm, ForwardSlash, as its head of search.

The appointment marks the continuation of Walker's recruitment drive, after winning the £70m Barclays account in March. The agency had a digital team of three when it won the account.

Since then, head of digital Mark Syal has been recruiting a digital team to manage the bank's digital requirements. The independent agency has also appointed James Cooper as head of affiliate. Cooper joins from dgm where he also worked in affiliate marketing.

In another appointment, Saija Souros is set to join as search manager. Souros is joining from travel company Octopus, which is part of the same group as eBookers.

Walker's Syal said Pieterse had gained both paid-for search and search engine optimisation experience while working on behalf of gambling sites for ForwardSlash.

Yvonne Adams has also joined Walker-i as a planner from OMD.

Syal said he was close to appointing a further two managers, but was still looking for an account director to head up the digital account for Barclays. He said: "We will have 12 people by July and I'm hoping it will be 15 by the middle of August. We need to get to 19 by the year end."
