Wal-Mart and AOL to launch cheap internet service

LONDON - Wal-Mart is to launch a co-branded US internet access service in partnership with AOL Time Warner in the autumn.

The service, called Wal-Mart Connect, will cost less than $10 (£7.06) a month to access and will be run by AOL subsidiary CompuServe.

The plans for the service were first announced in December 1999, when the two companies signed the agreement to provide cheap internet access to consumers who live in smaller "Wal-Mart communities", where internet access was not readily available.

The long-awaited service will compete with other ISPs offering access for about $20 (£14.14) a month. America Online recently announced that its flat-rate price will rise by 9% to $23.90 (£16.87) a month in July.
