LONDON - Oil giant Shell is to begin selling grocery products from retailer Waitrose at its UK forecourts.

The offer will run across three forecourts in the West Midlands with the possible outcome of a larger number of Shell service stations taking on the convenience products in 2010.

The Waitrose products on sale includes sandwiches, wraps and snacks, as well as a small selection of grocery items, ranging from bread and pasta to ready meals and toiletries.

‘Today's announcement builds on plans by Waitrose to accelerate its presence in the convenience sector through new formats and channels,' said Waitrose managing director Mark Price.

In September Waitrose announced plans to open around 300 convenience stores in the UK, as it looks to dramatically increase its presence. It also said it was in discussions with Boots to trial the sale of product ranges in each others' stores, including Boots supporting Waitrose with healthcare and well-being ranges and Waitrose supporting Boots with a range of foods.

Shell UK operates over 900 sites, whilst Waitrose now operates 221 branches. The trial will begin on 25 November.
