Waitrose runs campaign based on comment by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger

LONDON - Waitrose has launched a comical advertising campaign promoting its Essential range, in response to a comment made by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Waitrose runs campaign based on comment by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger

The campaign, created by Kitcatt Nohr Alexander Shaw, responds to a Wenger comment when talking about the transfer market. Wenger said: ‘Can you buy players at Waitrose?'

The ads feature Wenger's quote and a number of products from the essential range which could be consumed on a match-day, such as Essential scotch eggs, crisps and pork pies.

One ad carries the strapline: 'The essential home team' and the copy: 'Sorry Mr Wenger, we don't sell footballers at Waitrose. But you will find all the other essentials for a match at home.'

The campaign appears in Waitrose stores and on LCD screens at train stations in north London - near to the Arsenal ground. Media was bought by Manning Gottlieb OMD.

The campaign is similar to a campaign the retailer ran in 2007, following comments by the then Chelsea manger Jose Mourinho about the quality of the retailer's eggs.
