Waitrose to launch retro sweets in response to customer poll

LONDON - Waitrose will add aniseed balls, sherbet pips and chocolate mice to its confectionery offering on 4 January.

Waitrose to launch retro sweets in response to customer poll

These were three of the most-requested sweets in the supermarket's 'Great sweet revival' poll, in which more than 2000 consumers voted for the childhood sweets they would like Waitrose to bring back.

Unlike the red versions that used to be sold in corner shops, the Waitrose aniseed balls will be white because retro-sweet manufacturer Monty Bojangles does not use artificial colours or flavourings.

confectionery buyer Matthew Jones said: ‘We received a fantastic response to our campaign, so I think our new retro sweets will be as popular with children today as those who remember tucking into them in decades past.'
