The device, fitted on the seat belt, would disable the ignition if the driver is over the limit. The car maker said the innovation would be tested before it was put into general production.
However, a spokeswoman for Alcohol Concern warned that drivers needed to remember that drinking any alcohol before driving could impair performance.
"Even a small reduction in reaction speed or hand-eye co-ordination could cause an accident," she said.
Volvo said the "breathalyser lock" could help prevent some of the 10,000 alcohol-related road accident deaths each year in Europe.
