Phillipson takes up the post next week and said he plans to make the IAB a "truly advertiser-focused organisation". He said he plans to reveal his strategy for the organisation after 100 days in office. His chief role will be to persuade big brands and their advertising agencies to commit a greater proportion of ad budgets to digital channels, and of the potential for brand building online.
The new IAB CEO has been head of advertising at Vodafone since July 1999, a period encompassing the launch of Vodafone Live! -- backed by ads starring David Beckham -- and the "How are you?" brand campaign. Before Vodafone he was an account director at The Marketing Store and held marketing roles at Barclays and Granada.
IAB chairman Richard Eyre said of the appointment: "Guy is perfect for this job. He understands the instincts, concerns and ambitions of our customers and will bring his proven vision and charisma to enhance the IAB's return on investment for members."
Phillipson commented: "As a major advertiser, I know the internet as a formidable sales machine, but it's also a great medium to build brands using engaging, interactive creative work.
"Over the coming months I look forward to meeting and listening to our advertisers, our members and media and creative agencies."
