The fake cash is packed into the "Big Star", a 20ft perspex model of the station's red star logo hanging above Regent Street.
Virgin is hoping to increase its reach across the UK with the promotion, which it is trailing with TV, internet video and outdoor ads starring its breakfast DJ Christian O'Connell.
The first guess of £15,562.17 was made this morning at nine o'clock by Sharon from Cardiff. The station will give listeners further opportunities coming every hour for the next week. If the prize has not been won by the end of the week DJs will start to give clues.
David Andrews, marketing director at Virgin Radio, said: "This is our most exciting ever station promotion and we're expecting a massive listener response to grow both our reach and hours."
The station reached an average of 2,338,000 listeners a week according to the latest Rajar figures, covering the second quarter of 2006. This is 3% less than the 2,410,000 it reached in the same quarter a year earlier.
This Wednesday the station is starting a four-week promotion for the Metro Ski & Snowboard Show on October 18-22. Live reads and pre-recorded trails will encourage listeners to visit the show and a branded microsite at to order tickets and find out more.
The activity will step up a gear on October 16 with four nights of competitions to win prizes related to the Metro show on Virgin's 'Ben Jones Most Wanted' show.
