Virgin adds Penis Envy to its portfolio

LONDON - Virgin 1, Virgin Media Television’s new entertainment channel due to launch this autumn on Freeview and cable, has announced a new addition to its programming: Penis Envy.

The documentary is in keeping with the male-skewed image the channel was hoping to achieve, in order to attract male advertisers such as BMW.
Penis Envy will form part of Virgin 1’s primetime schedule and maintains the channel’s commitment to unconventional programming. It focuses on the increasing popularity of plastic surgery and enlargement products for men. The programme will conduct “The Great Penis Survey” nationwide in order to discover the average UK penis size.
The programme is made by Twofour broadcast and is joining a line-up that includes The Sarah Connor Chronicles and The Riches, starring Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver.
There is no launch date set for the channel, but it is thought to be imminent. The channel is tipped as Sky One’s rival and is the first Virgin-branded television station. Interactive Digital Sales (IDS), Virgin Media’s sales house, has recently created a specialist team to handle sales for the channel.
Celia Taylor, director of programming for Virgin 1, said the programme was “just the start of what viewers can expect to see on Virgin 1 in the autumn”.
