Viacom says advertising set to rebound

NEW YORK - US broadcaster Viacom has reported an increase in second-quarter revenues at its TV and radio divisions as advertising sales rebounded.

The media group, owner of CBS and UPN, which shows the new 'Star Trek' series 'Enterprise', said second-quarter revenue grew 2% year on year to $5.85bn (£3.71bn), while net income was up to $547m from $524m last time.

It attributed the rise to a strong performance at its cable TV network division, which includes MTV and Nickelodeon. The division saw revenues rise 4% to $1.1bn.

The company said the outlook for the second half of the year was good, as CBS has already sold $1.9bn against its autumn schedule, a 46% rise year on year. CBS's programmes include 'The Late Show with David Letterman' and the daytime soap 'The Young and the Restless'.

Chairman and chief executive Sumner Redstone said he expects the improvement in advertising to accelerate in the second half of the year.

The company expects to achieve double-digit earnings growth for the full year.

Redstone said the company had begun buying back its own shares, which have fallen more than 18% this year. Yesterday, they closed up 60 cents, or 1.7%, at $35.05 following the results announcement.
