Marketing previously reported that negotiations were at an advanced stage between the two parties. A source confirmed today (Thursday) that a deal – which could be worth as much as £5m a year – is likely to be signed within a month.
However, the FA will delay disclosing details of the deal until it learns whether England has been successful in its bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
Fifa will reveal the idenity of the host country in Zurich, Switzerland on 2 December.
If the deal goes through Vauxhall will replace Nationwide, which ended its England sponsorship earlier this year.
Any Vauxhall deal could conflict with the FA's existing deal with Fiat, the official car supplier to the England team.
The FA and Vauxhall declined to comment.
