US regulator to take no action against Amazon unit

LONDON - The US Federal Trade Commission has ruled that Alexa Internet, a software company owned by Amazon.com, "probably" made deceptive and misleading statements about its privacy practices, but has decided not to take action against the company.

The Commission sent a letter to the company saying that some of Alexa's privacy statements were "likely to be deceptive", and that the company broke the Federal Trade Commission act by aggregating users' e-mail addresses without their knowledge.

However, Alexa, which develops web navigation software, has since changed its privacy policy and has settled a class action lawsuit filed by users who complained about privacy violations.
