The Sun's frontpage today shows the captive former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein half naked with the strapline "Tyrants In His Pants".
Other pictures inside show Saddam washing his clothes in a bowl, walking round his cell and sleeping on his bed in five pages of coverage. The US military said the photos are believed to have been taken more than a year ago.
The US military has condemned the photos, saying they are probably in breach of the Geneva Convention on human rights and has pledged to find the source to prevent it happening again.
"Multinational Forces-Iraq is disappointed at the possibility that someone responsible for the security, welfare and detention of Saddam would take and provide these photos for public release.
"The lapse is being aggressively investigated to determine, if possible, who took the photos, and to ensure existing procedures and directives are complied with to prevent this from happening again," a statement from the US military read.
There is a fear that the photos may further inflame the situation in Iraq, which is suffering daily attacks from insurgents who are largely thought to be former supporters of Saddam.
The Sun said it obtained the pictures from US military sources. The paper defended its publication of the pictures with a quote from the US military source who leaked the photos.
"It's important that the people of Iraq see him like that to destroy the myth," the source said.
Saddam is awaiting trial in an undisclosed location for war crimes committed during his 30-year reign of terror.
There has been speculation that he will face the hangman after he has been tried.
