Universal McCann's global chief named chairman of Magna

Ira Carlin, the Universal McCann Worldwide chairman and chief executive, has taken the newly created post of worldwide chairman of its Magna Global media negotiation unit.

Carlin, 54, is joined by the former Media Edge senior executive Hans Germeraad, who lost his job as the chief executive of Europe, the Middle East and Africa last month.

Germeraad relinquished his responsibilities at the merged Mediaedge:CIA to the chairman, Mainardo de Nardis, and now takes on the new role of regional director for Magna Global Europe.

"The Magna model is taking hold across a number of major advertising markets,

Interpublic's chairman and chief executive, John Dooner, said.

"As a negotiating company it delivers maximum clout for those buying agencies that participate, while allowing each agency and its clients to retain their proprietary buying and planning tools."

Germeraad, 45, will be charged with building Magna Global in Europe to the same degree that Bill Cella has done in the US. Both Germeraad and Cella will report to Carlin.

Universal McCann has promoted Robin Kent, the president of Universal McCann Worldwide and the former regional director of Universal McCann Europe, the Middle East and Africa, into Carlin's former role.
