United Business Media to cut 200 staff

LONDON - United Business Media has said its UK magazine division CMP Information has begun a consultation process which is seeking to find savings of £10m or the equivalent of 200 staff, following a strategic review.

In a brief statement, CMP Information, which publishes magazines such as Music Week, Fono, Farmers Guardian, Building Designs, Chemist & Druggist and Pulse, said it would begin a consultation process with staff.

The consultation process is expected to last 90 days, following the election of employee repesentatives.

In August, United blamed a fall in first-half pre-tax profits from £137.8m to £71.1m on CMP. CMP saw profits almost halve to £35.4m from £70.7m last time in the face of the downturn in the US advertising market.

The latest round of job cuts follow more than 700 axed earlier this year as it strived to meet its cost-saving targets of £60m.

The strategic review follows the appointment in August of Bernard Gray to the position of chief executive. Gray joined United in 1999. His responsibilities have included strategy, business development and communications. He was extensively involved in the Carlton merger process, which collapsed last year under regulatory pressure.
