Unilever's FitzGerald holds on to top spot in Power 100 table

LONDON - Unilever's Niall FitzGerald has retained his position as the UK's most powerful marketer, ahead of Tesco's Tim Mason, Consignia's Allan Leighton and easyGroup's Stelios Haji-Ioannou.

FitzGerald heads Marketing's Power 100 list, now in its third year. It features the 100 people who, based on brand, influence, spending power, celebrity status and entrepreneurial skills, exert tremendous power in the industry.

The Unilever co-chairman, who commands a £143.3m adspend for brands such as Dove, Flora and Sure, is one of just four non-movers in the list. He retains his position by virtue of a 35% pre-tax profit increase in 2001.

Almost half of the list are new entries, led by Roger Holmes, the chief executive at Marks & Spencer, who has stormed into the list at number five.

Lottery boss Dianne Thompson, the highest-placed woman in the marketing A-list at number 11, has dropped six places after a tough year of declining sales.
