Unilever fails to satisfy ASA over Persil ad claims

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint by Procter & Gamble about a press ad for Unilever's Persil Non-Bio, which claimed to give 'unbeatable cleaning and care'.

The ASA considered that although Unilever produced sufficient evidence to back up the 'unbeatable cleaning' claim on its non-biological tablets, it had not provided the same evidence for its powder.

Marlow Foods, the maker of Quorn, has fallen foul of the ASA again over its description of Quorn as being derived from mushrooms.

The ASA upheld complaints from The Mushroom Bureau in London and the Centre for Science in the Public Interest in Washington DC, about three magazine ads for Quorn which claimed the Quorn mince and burgers were 'made from a natural mushroom protein'.

The complainants argued that although Quorn is fungal in origin, it is not derived from mushrooms.

The ASA judged that it was misleading and ordered the company not to make the same claim on its ads in future without qualification.
