UKTV moves into advertiser-funded shows with Laithwaites deal

LONDON - UKTV Food has teamed up with wine merchant Laithwaites and commissioned a series of five programmes that will take viewers on a tour of French vineyards.

'The Flying Winemaker' has yet to be scheduled, although UKTV confirmed that the series will be broadcast in its entirety by the end of the year.

The programme is fronted by Laithwaites founder Tony Laithwaite, who visited vineyards across France during this year's grape harvest.

Laithwaite will fly between the southern and northern hemispheres and visit a cast of growers, winemakers and merchants. At the end of each show, viewers will be given the opportunity to buy wines through Laithwaites from the vineyards featured.

Stephen Somerville, UKTV commercial manager, said: "I'm genuinely excited about this new series of commercial features appearing on UKTV Food, and think that it opens up a brand new revenue model for us."

The advertiser-funded series has been made by Kate Beal for KMB Productions. UKTV's Jane Mote oversaw the production.

Laithwaites has built a strong reputation for providing quality wines via mail order and through its retail outlets.
