UK retailers reject Atkins Diet food and drink range

LONDON - Plans for an Atkins Diet-branded food range have hit a distribution hiccup as major UK retailers prove reluctant to stock what could be a controversial listing.

Atkins Nutritional, the company behind the successful diet regime, intends to launch an Atkins-branded food and drink range in the UK next year.

The Atkins Nutritional Approach advocates a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet.

The popularity of the diet is such that it has hit sales of Unilever's Slimfast brand. However, recent publicity, including reports that the Atkins Diet has been responsible for at least one death, has made supermarkets wary of listing the range.

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said the supermarket had no plans to stock the range, while Boots said it had not yet decided whether to stock it.

A spokeswoman for Atkins Nutritional said negotiations over the distribution of the range were "at a sensitive stage" and would not comment further.
