UK consumers have doubled their expenditure on organic food over

the past three years, according to a new report from market research

company, Datamonitor.

The UK market, now worth pounds 363m, is one of the most buoyant in

Europe. Recent debate over genetically modified foods has fuelled the

demand. Sales of organic food at Sainsbury’s rose 15% in February.

Datamonitor believes that organic food, with nutraceutical products

(food that improves your health), will be the prime area of new product

development in future.

In the UK, limited supply but rising demand means that 70% of organic

products sold are imported. But there are signs of change. Mars has

launched its Seeds of Change range of pasta and sauces, while Scottish

firm Baxters is about to bring out a line.
