UK hotels given standard rating

The main British tourism bodies are joining forces with the AA and RAC to offer a consistent hotel and guesthouse rating system for the first time.

The organisations, which include VisitBritain, VisitWales and VisitScotland, have come together to draw up a set of common standards for their disparate hotel-guide services.

The ratings, which will replace all the previous accreditation schemes in operation, will use a one- to five-star system across three categories: hotel, guest accommodation and budget hotel.

Each tourism body will retain its logo on the award plaques and promote the changes in its own consumer marketing.

International activity to attract visitors to Britain will use a generic theme, such as 'Look for the stars', to back the scheme.
