Italy pays the highest with an average salary of $45,844 (£30,143), followed by Australia ($38,613/£25,389), the US ($37,604/£24,725) and Germany ($37,570/£24,703). South Africa pays the worst, with an average event co-ordinator’s salary just shy of $12,000 (£7,890).

Spain’s average was measured at $20,127 (£13,234) and Ireland’s at $29,233 (£19,221).

The research, which was conducted by event sponsorship marketplace SponsorMyEvent, also showed that event managers in London earn almost $20,000 (£13,150) more a year than those in Birmingham. The average salary in the capital was measured at $53,256 (£35,016), while Birmingham’s was calculated to be at $34,272 (£22,534).

Manchester’s event managers earn an average of $45,659 (£30,021), Liverpool and Edinburgh’s are both on $38,074 (£25,034) and Glasgow’s are paid an average of $35,028 (£21,031).

The Salaries in the Event Industry report also showed that the average salary of a UK-based director of events is the third highest paid out of the countries surveyed, coming in at $69,708 (£45,834) behind Australia and Germany.

The gender distribution in the events industry was measured at a ratio of 8:2 in favour of women.

Peter Poehle, chief executive and co-founder of SponsorMyEvent, said: "It’s not surprising that the salaries for event managers are the highest in US and UK’s hot spots: New York, San Francisco and London. London is on par with New York and San Francisco beats them all.

"On average, salaries for event managers are higher in the UK compared to the US, but the international crown is taken by down-under: Australia seems to be a fertile ground for event managers."

He added: "Event coordinators are surprisingly well paid in Italy whereas UK lags clearly behind. Event planners will most likely be the most happy in the US and again Australia. German directors of events cash in far beyond double compared to their direct neighbours in France, followed by Australia and the US."
