UK drinkers want clear information on measure size

Almost three-quarters of people think pubs and bars should display clearer information about their alcohol servings.

Just over a third think the standard measure of spirits in bars is 25ml, while 7% beleive it is 35ml and 7% said 15ml. Nearly half of the 1122 people surveyed by OMD Snapshots for Marketing this week didn't know what the standard is.

The findings come as Bacardi-Martini is launching an initiative aimed at convincing bars to deliver 35ml servings of spirits instead of the usual 25ml (Marketing, December 5). Customers will pay 20% more for 40% more alcohol, and can gauge their intake more easily because a 35ml serving brings a spirit drink in line with a glass of wine or a half-pint of lager.

Along with new optics and staff training kits, Bacardi is supplying point-of-sale literature for customers. Industry self-regulator The Portman Group has applauded moves to give clearer information.
