UEFA unveils Cup competition logo

UEFA, European football's governing body, is to reveal a fresh brand identity ahead of this year's UEFA Cup competition to raise the profile of the tournament on the global stage.

The logo aims to help the UEFA Cup stand out against other competitions, such as UEFA Champions League.

It is also designed to clearly position the tournament following the merging of the UEFA Cup with the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in the 1999/2000 season.

Lars-Christer Olsson, chief executive of UEFA, said: 'The central branding of the competition will help to promote its new format by giving a strong identity to the UEFA Cup, and will make it easily identifiable to the many supporters around the world.'

The new look, unveiled last week in Monte Carlo ahead of this year's first round draw, has been in development for 18 months.
