UBM warns SARS will slash profits in Asia

United Business Media's (UBM) organising division CMP Asia could lose up to £8m in the first six months of 2003 as a result of the SARS health scare.

Speaking at UBM's agm on 15 May, chairman Geoff Unwin said: "The promise of another good trading year at CMP Asia has been overshadowed by the SARS outbreak. The company is working with insurers to mitigate this shortfall."

The Asia Pacific Leather Fair (APLF), a joint venture with the SIC Group in France, has been cancelled following an earlier decision to postpone the event from April to 26-28 June.

CMP Asia president and chief executive Peter Sutton said: "We have received a positive response to this decision from many exhibitors and visitors.

We are already planning for the second edition of this exhibition in October as well as next year's April fair."

The World Health Organisation lifted its advisory ban on travelling to Hong Kong last month. The decision means CMP Asia's Hong Kong Jewellery and Watch Fair and Asia's Fashion Jewellery & Accessories Fair can now go ahead as planned from 19-22 June at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Sutton said: "We can see that the situation is improving and hope business will soon be back to normal."
