UBC talks to GCap on music downloads

UBC Media has confirmed it is in talks with GCap Media about providing digital music downloads, soon after revealing it would be working with Chrysalis Radio, Emap and the Guardian Media Group.

If successful, UBC would provide the technology that allows real-time downloads of tracks from GCap stations on to mobile phones as the listener hears them. The deal would be just one part of GCap's move to embrace digital technology that would also see the launch of a range of online services for Xfm.

Will Harding, strategy and development director at GCap Media, said: "GCap has always been very much a radio company, but we are now looking at a strategy in the future to take our radio brands forward."

UBC Media also announced this week that it had signed a deal with the Guardian Media Group to provide its radio stations with news, as part of its syndicated Sky News Radio service.

UBC Media will supply the service to GMG Radio's 11 regional FM digital and analogue stations, including Smooth 102.2 in London. The new service will be broadcast alongside GMG's existing news service provided by IRN.
