Turner Broadcasting System is axing its entertainment channel TNT

to concentrate on its core strengths of classic films and cartoons.

TNT will go off air from 30 June and be replaced by Turner Classic

Movies, the film channel launched last October. Last year, Turner added

drama series, music and wrestling programmes to TNT to differentiate it

from TCM, which became its classic film channel.

Dee Forbes, sales director at Turner Entertainment Networks, said: ’We

are the first to say that general entertainment is pretty saturated and

going forward with digital you have to have the strongest programming to

maintain audiences.’

In line with the broadcaster’s strategy of focusing on its cartoon and

film programming, Turner is extending its children’s programming with a

new cartoon channel called Boomerang.

Boomerang will feature old cartoons from the Hanna-Barbera library with

classics such as Yogi Bear, Top Cat and Hong Kong Phooey. The new

channel will broadcast from 6am until midnight seven days a week and be

available along with the Cartoon Network and Cartoon Network Plus on Sky

Digital.
