Troubles in France as Emap makes progress elsewhere

LONDON - Publishing and radio giant Emap said that it is making reasonable progress for the first four to five months of the year, with consumer magazines performing strongly and radio revenues improving.

The company, which owns magazines such as FHM and Arena and radio stations Kiss and Magic, says that it will meet its growth expectations for the year after posting pre-tax profits of £196m for 2003 in May.

Emap chairman Adam Broadbent said that there had been a slow start to the year in radio advertising and this had continued throughout the first quarter. Revenues for Emap's music television channels such as Smash Hits are now reported to be showing reasonable growth.

In France, where Emap is under pressure, there has been no change in the competitive landscape and, in particular, on TV listings titles, while the wider advertising market has weakened.

Shares in Emap plunged in May by more than 10% when it warned that the strong performances by its consumer magazines would be "significantly impacted" by competitive pressures in the French TV listings market.

In May, chairman Adam Broadbent told the AGM that it expected profits for the current year to March 2005 to miss forecasts due to the weakness of the euro and its French business.
