Trinity Mirror total ad revenue falls 28%

LONDON - Trinity Mirror's overall revenue is down 16.9% in first half of year, with its national titles suffering a 14.4% decline in ad revenue.

The publishing group has reported an ad revenue fall of 34.5% at its regional newspaper division in the first six months of 2009, but the revenue decline across its operation has slowed.

Overall, Trinity Mirror, which owns the Daily Mirror and more than 140 regional newspapers, suffered a year-on-year revenue drop of 16.9% to £383m in the 26 weeks to 28 June. Within this, total ad revenue fell 28% to £168.4m and circulation revenues were down 4.2% to £169.8m.

The company's operating profit fell by 31.4% to £49m, with pre-tax profits falling by 39.5% to £31.3m. Trinity Mirror has closed 22 titles since the start of the year and cut 900 jobs.

Trinity Mirror's regional division's total revenue declined 28.2% year on year, falling to £155.4m. Ad revenue across the division fell 34.5% to £104m, with circulation revenue down 8.1% to £36.5m for the same period.

Display advertising was down 21.5%, recruitment fell by 50%, property by 52.5% and automotive by 34.4%. Total digital revenue across the regional operation declined by 16.9% to £16.2m.

Figures for July show a relative improvement, however, with regional ad revenue down 29% year on year.

Trinity Mirror's national newspaper operation reported that total revenue for the period fell by 6.9% year on year to £227.6m. Figures for July show that total group revenue was down 13%, with ad revenue down 23% and circulation revenue down 3%.
