Staff on the Daily Mirror were informed about the changes yesterday and have entered into a consultation period with the company. The company said it will try to seek alternative posts for the 19 M staff and nine people employed on The Look.
The final issues of M, a glossy weekly, and The Look, the TV listings and entertainment supplement, will appear with the August 9 edition of the paper.
The Daily Mirror has had a tough year, following a disastrous change in editorial policy to report more serious news and less celebrity content, which resulted in a drastic decline in the paper's circulation.
The Daily Mirror's circulation continues to languish below the landmark 2m figure and, although May provided a brief respite when it climbed 2%, the paper continues to slide despite returning to more tabloid-style stories and celebrity news.
In the last set of ABCs for June, its circulation fell 0.85% to 1,948,870, a drop of 7.93% year on year, bringing its average circulation for the six months from January to June to 1,989,174.
Trinity Mirror said the supplements were proving too much of a drain on resources, which could be used more effectively to improve the title in the long term.
"We're committed to providing the best possible value for our readers and advertisers. We have concluded that there are better ways of using the resources currently invested in producing M magazine," a spokesman for Trinity Mirror said.
"Put simply, M magazine does not deliver an adequate return on our investment. Refocusing our resources is just one part of the bigger picture for the Daily Mirror as we go forward," he added.
Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey is set to reveal the findings of a strategic review of the company at its interim results next Thursday July 31.
Reports have suggested that it will result in a restructure at the company, which could see the loss of hundreds of jobs as it simplifies its advertising sales and marketing procedures.
