Topshop plans US expansion with Kate Moss range

LONDON - UK high street retailer Topshop has unveiled plans to move into the US market by agreeing a deal with New York based department store Barneys to sell its Kate Moss-designed clothing range, which launches next month.

It is understood Sir Philip Green, owner of , will open boutique branches of the chain in selected stores in the US, stocking the 91-item range of Kate Moss designed clothes, as a means of testing Topshop's potential in the States.

Topshop plans to debut its Kate Moss range, which includes T-shirts, dresses and leather jackets, in the US at Barney's Madison Avenue flagship store on May 8, which Moss has been lined up to attend along with Green.

Other locations earmarked include San Francisco and Beverly Hills, which Topshop hopes will allow it to ramp up its profile in the US market. Green has described the venture as "the ultimate test" for the company.

Barneys, which has long been tipped to open a store in London, has 26 department stores across the US, including four in New York. Its profile in the UK has been raised in recent years by TV series 'Sex and the City', in which Sarah Jessica Parker's character makes frequent visits to the store.

Topshop also aims to raise its profile by using its own celebrity client list, which includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Beyonce, who are already high-profile stars in the US.

Green said: "The deal with Barneys will enable us to learn and give us a toe in the water. We are in no doubt this is the ultimate test."
