Top-selling Glamour breaks 600,000-copy barrier

LONDON - Handbag-sized titles are a winner in the women's glossy market, with Conde Nast's Glamour selling more than 600,000 copies to become Britain's favourite magazine.

Glamour, which instigated the fad for all things compact, is up 5% on the year and 4% period on period, bringing its sale to 605,747 copies in the latest set of Audit Bureau of Circulations figures.

Its nearest rival, Cosmopolitan from the National Magazine Company, which also launched a handbag-sized edition this year, is slightly down on the period by 0.9% to 456,447 copies.

In a fairly bright period for the sector, Cosmopolitan was one of the few titles to experience a dip. Sister title Company recorded a fall of 1.70% on the period to 325,185 copies. The title was down 1.60% on the year.

However, there was good news for Natmags. Its upmarket Harpers & Queen, which is hatching plans to become more mainstream, showed the biggest increase in the women's glossies -- up 8.30% to 97,756 copies, a 10% rise year on year.

Hachette Filipacchi's Elle, which has hired ex-Cosmopolitan editor Lorraine Candy and unveiled plans for a smaller London version, was marginally up this period, rising 0.10% to 201,469 copies. It was up 0.30% on the year. Stablemate Red also experienced an uplift of 0.30% to 197,263 copies. The title was up 3.90% year on year.

Conde Nast had good news all round. Vogue was up 0.10% period on period to 205,320 copies and up 1.50% on the year. Vanity Fair's sales increased 3.20% on the period to 93,125 copies and were up 4.30% on the year.

Nicholas Coleridge, the managing director of Conde Nast, said: "The Glamour result is a sensation. To continue to see significant newsstand growth in the magazine's fourth year shows exactly how dynamic it is. The upmarket sector remains buoyant, with all our titles up in circulation and several record high results. It has been a strong six months for Conde Nast."

IPC's Instyle was up 1.60% for the quarter to 190,069, while sister title Marie Claire increased its sales by 5.50% period on period to 380,760 copies.

Emap's New Woman was up 0.10% to 290,913 copies period on period. Its sales were 5.50% higher on the year.

The BBC's more mature Eve continued to do well. It was up 5.40% for the quarter to 150,069 copies.
