Hammond began his career in BBC local radio, working for the corporation's York, Cumbria, Leeds and Lancashire stations, before he joined the Men & Motors TV channel as a presenter in 1998. He has worked on 'Top Gear' since 2002, famously surviving a 288mph crash when being filmed in an attempt to break a speed record last September.
Lesley Douglas, the controller of Radio 2, described Hammond as "a warm, funny and clever broadcaster who has never lost his radio roots".
She said: "These specials will give him the opportunity to get close to the audience in a way only radio can -- in a live, interactive and creative environment."
Radio 2 is the UK's most popular station with a 15.8% share of all listening in the fourth quarter of 2006, compared with 16% a year earlier.
