The Times set to follow Indy lead with tabloid trial

The Times is planning to emulate The Independent with a tabloid edition, to be trialled in London and South-East early in the new year.

The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph are expected to launch tabloids in response, triggering the biggest revolution in newspaper marketing and design for a century.

Industry sources suggest that The Times tabloid edition may appear as soon as next month, but the cost and glut of TV advertising in the pre-Christmas period makes a January launch more likely. Times Newspapers marketing director Andrew Mullins denied a launch was imminent. He said: "We have no plans today, but as for tomorrow, who knows?"

Guardian Newspapers marketing director Marc Sands said that if The Times went tabloid, The Guardian would have to respond quickly. Telegraph Group managing director Hugo Drayton confirmed that a tabloid was ready to go, but added that another option was to let its rivals go tabloid and launch a campaign promoting The Daily Telegraph as "the only serious broadsheet".
