Spackman will join Richard Caseby, currently managing editor of The Sunday Times, who will now become assistant editor for Times Online, and Peter Bale, editorial director for Times Online, who is set to become editorial director of digital strategy.
She is credited with playing a large part in The Times conversion to tabloid format in November 2004, after joining the title four years ago as property editor. Her replacement has yet to be announced.
The Times editor Robert Thomson said the editorial reshuffle follows an important phase in the development of Times Online, which it claims has significantly increased its readership over the last year.
Last month it was reported that The Times was to develop an internet television channel called Times TV, which could use third-party news clips and aggregated content from the likes of Sky, Reuters and BSkyB. News Corporation owns a 38% share in BSkyB.
Thomson said: "With more than 8m unique monthly users, the site has a loyal audience both in the UK and internationally, an audience that wants The Times and The Sunday Times quality reporting, comment and analysis."
John Witherow, editor of The Sunday Times, said added "[Times Online ] created a unique environment for its readers" by enlisting the likes of columnists Hala Jaber, Christina Lamb, India Knight, Jeremy Clarkson and AA Gill.
