Thomson Directories is teaming up with Airflash, a platform for wireless and location-sensitive information.
Subscribers to Airflash's WAP service will be able to search for businesses on Thomson's 2.3 million listings database via their mobile phone. Information will include the company's address, telephone number, directions and the time it takes to walk there.
According to Airflash European marketing communications manager Lori Worley, the technology is superior to other similar services because it can give an estimated walking time which will take obstacles such as motorways, river crossings and railways into account.
Having found the information, users can email it to a friend or post an 'm-note' on the Airflash network to alert others of their location at that time.
Worley says: 'A great database is absolutely fundamental to our service.' She adds that Thomson Directories and Airflash work well together because providing relevant information at a local level is at the heart of their philosophies.
