Thomas Cook hires ex Abbey marketer Angus Porter

LONDON - Thomas Cook Group, the company formed by the merger of Thomas Cook and MyTravel, has drafted in former Abbey marketing chief Angus Porter as group strategy director.

Porter joins from WPP's brand development consultancy Added Value where he was global chief executive. He will be responsible for strategic development of the Thomas Cook brand and the group's strategic e-commerce agenda. He will also be tasked with looking for opportunities in new markets and developing new products and services.

Porter will take up the role on 2 June and will report to Thomas Cook Group chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa who said: 'I am delighted that Angus has accepted the group strategy director role, one that is vital for the future development of our group.'

Porter has also held senior marketing positions at BT and Mars. He has been an independent non-executive director of Thomas Cook Group since June 2007; prior to that he was a non-executive director of MyTravel for five years.

Thomas Cook Group is expected to generate sales of around £8bn, serve 19m customers and operate a network of over 3,000 travel stores.
