More than a third of marketers would not attend university today

More than a third (36.3%) of UK marketers would not have gone to university today because of the escalating costs of tuition fees, according to research published by recruitment firm EMR.

The survey interviewed more than 330 marketers, gauging their views on the value of a university education.

It found just 39% would have gone to university faced with today's costs of university education. The remaining 24.7% of the sample said they did not know.

On average, marketing graduates earn an average salary of just £18,000 (according to the Association of Graduate Recruiters).

Graduates entering other professions – such as the law and banking – can command higher earnings.

The survey also found that executives from other professions were against the idea of attending university today – 23% of lawyers, 34% of accountants and financial services professionals, and 35% of people in HR.

EMR said the coalition Government's increase of tuition fees to its £9,000 ceiling, combined with the cost of loans and lost income from not being in work, meant that the cost of a three-year course stood at £88,700.
