Tesco slams Newspaper Society report

UK supermarket chain Tesco has dismissed as “wrong and out of date” a report by the Newspaper Society that forecasts regional newspapers would lose between £15m and £21m in sales if the retailer’s joint venture magazine distribution system with WH Smith is introduced.

LONDON (Brand Republic) – UK supermarket chain Tesco has dismissed as “wrong and out of date” a report by the Newspaper Society that forecasts regional newspapers would lose between £15m and £21m in sales if the retailer’s joint venture magazine distribution system with WH Smith is introduced.

The report claims that up to 12,000 retail outlets which distribute titles could close if the national distribution system, which is said to favour larger wholesalers, goes ahead. This would severely damage the sales of regional newspapers, the report says.
