Tesco joins in mobile phone service

Just a week after Sainsbury’s launch of a mobile phone service, rival supermarket chain Tesco has announced its own version will be rolled out in early 2001.

LONDON (Brand Republic) – Just a week after Sainsbury’s launch of a mobile phone service, rival supermarket chain Tesco has announced its own version will be rolled out in early 2001.

It says the pay-as-you-go service, run in conjunction with an as-yet-unannounced network provider, will be cheaper than those offered by Vodafone, Orange and BT Cellnet.

The retailer said it would use text messages to market special offers at its stores to subscribers.

Sainsbury’s service is through BT Cellnet and will be available to Reward Card holders from January.
