children’s and cookery books, commissioned from Brilliant Books, part of

Forward Publishing.

The books will be heavily promoted in-store and will carry the Tesco

logo prominently.

Fiona Kennedy, buying manager for books at Tesco, said: ’After extensive

research we found that our customers would welcome the idea of Tesco

branded books but wanted something new and fresh.

’With cookery titles, for example, customers wanted more picture

illustrations, and less instructions, and parents were looking for a

range of books that were fun to read but also had an educational

content.’

The collapse of the Net Book Agreement in 1995 first encouraged Tesco to

compete seriously in the book market.
